Boulder, CO 80302
Price: $28/$20(children under 16)
The Christmas Revels is an annual holiday performance, this year featuring songs and stories of Scandinavia. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first globally recognized health day. Now in its 29th year, people in the Boulder region will join together with hundreds of other World AIDS Day events across the globe. Globally, there are an estimated 36.7 million people who have the virus. In 2017, one million people in the US are living with HIV, and 1 in 7 of them don't know it. In Colorado, there are over 15,000 people living with HIV with over 600 people in the Boulder region known to be living with HIV. Despite the medical community knowing more than ever about HIV, almost 40,000 people in the US are diagnosed with HIV each year. There is still a basic lack of knowledge about HIV for many, and associated stigma and discrimination remains a reality for many people living with HIV. The mission of the Boulder County AIDS Project is to provide support, advocacy and education to those in our community who are living with or affected by HIV, and to serve as an outreach and information center to prevent the further transmission of HIV.

Beth Gadbaw Trio - 8pm
71 East Yale Ave
Denver, CO 80210
(303) 777-1003
Price: $14 in advance $16 at the door
Beth Gadbaw Trio featuring Roger Landes Described by The Redstone Review as “a Celtic angel…with all her heart in it,” and by Irish Music Magazine as “exceptional,” folksinger Beth Gadbaw is a Fulbright award-winning performer, teacher and scholar from Lyons, Colorado. Her trio features world-renowned bouzouki player Roger Landes, who has appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage and A Prairie Home Companion, and whose recording House to House was named by The Irish Times as one of the top five traditional albums of 2005. Rounding out the group is Colorado’s foremost fiddle and nyckelharpa player Sandra Wong, whose virtuosity has been honed from New York to Boulder to Sweden, Ireland, and beyond. Spirited and skilled, the trio produces a pure, energetic sound rooted in the Celtic tradition. Well-deserving of accolades for Gadbaw’s singing and songwriting skills, Gadbaw's debut solo album The Green Fields and the Mountains High is a compelling collection of traditional and original songs in English and Irish Gaelic. Some tracks, including the lively opener The Birds in the Spring, are richly accompanied by guitar, fiddle, and Gadbaw’s rhythmic bodhrán drum. Irish flute and Celtic harp also make appearances throughout the record. Other tracks, in the old Irish style known as seán nos, are sung acapella. Gadbaw’s own Thomas Watson is a captivating guitar-driven ballad taken from the letters of her New York Irish grandmother’s great uncle, who came to Montana via Troy, New York from Ireland during the Great Famine. Another Gadbaw original, Grania’s Song, is a bold, beautifully melodic, anthem-like homage to Irish Pirate Queen Granuaile, and is accompanied only with bodhrán and hand claps. Beth Gadbaw’s music can be heard on RTÉ’s Raidió na Gaeltachta and Radio 1, as well as on Colorado Public Radio, Folk Alley, and more. She performs as a solo artist, with high-energy traditional band Take Down the Door, and ethereal Celtic harp and vocal duo Gadbaw & Krimmel.

Since April 29, MSF medical teams have been traveling by helicopter and on foot to treat people spread across some 15 isolated mountain villages. Whether it’s old-time tunes in 7, Bach on nyckelharpa, mandolin and tabla, Swedish tunes from hundreds of years ago brought into a 21st century arrangement or Shakti revisited, or free improvisation; Sandra, Dom and Ty create a musical playground for everyone (both musicians and listeners) to explore, play, stretch, and grow in a joyful space. I'm very excited to be doing a show with Round Mountain, New Mexico's two-man singing folk orchestra. They are sometimes raucous (imagine trumpet and accordion played simultaneously by one person), sometimes subtle (the sound of West African kora), Round Mountain has great songs, emotional honesty, and an engaging live show. Jayme and I will be playing music from Norway to Bulgaria to Bach on Nyckelharpa, Banjo and Fiddle. We're keeping it simple: no advance tickets, just $12 at the door, $10 for students, artists and poorfolk. A show not to be missed!

With Beethoven's 5th as her nighttime lullaby, Sandra began studying the violin at age seven with the intention of becoming a concert violinist. This remained her sole focus for fifteen years until she discovered fiddling…and her entire musical world was turned upside down! Suddenly music became about connecting with other people in a joyful, communal way rather than an isolated striving for perfection. It began with Irish, Old-time and Bluegrass festival jams and has grown into her current livelihood of teaching, performing nationally and internationally, recording, leading study trips to other countries to study the traditional music and dance, and collaborating with other musicians from a diverse range of world music genres. In 1999, Sandra fell in love with a wonderful Swedish folk instrument called the nyckelharpa, a 16 stringed, keyed bowed instrument. It is now an integral part of her work and musical expression. www.sandrawongmusic.com or www.myspace.com/sandrawongmusic Yann Falquet Member of Quebecois "power trio" Genticorum, Yann Falquet is a truly active and creative acoustic guitar player on the Québécois music scene. He has explored many styles of music and completed a Bachelors degree in Jazz. Since then, he has developed a personal guitar style for Québec folk music, inspired by the playing of the accompanists of different cultures (Brittany, Scandinavia, Ireland, North America, etc). His involvement in traditional music scene brought Yann to perform on numerous recordings, and to regularly tour throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia. He also toured for three years with the award winning celtic/world group The McDades. Yann had the opportunity to teach at numerous music camps, including the Goderich Celtic College and Alasdair Fraser's Fiddle Train and Sierra Fiddle Camp. www.genticorum.com Christopher Layer Uilleann Pipes, Scottish Smallpipes, Irish Flute, Pennywhistle, and Scottish Highland Bagpipes: Christopher is a multi-instrumentalist, trained in both traditional and classical music. Chris is a native "Hoosier", and the son of musicians: Soprano, Dolores Layer and Bluegrass Fiddler, Edwin Layer. He has appeared as an orchestral soloist in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Knoxville, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Portland, Seattle, St Louis, and Baltimore. Particular performance highlights for Mr. Layer include several sold-out performances with The National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center with the Irish pops production: A Celtic Celebration. Christopher was named Artist in Residence by the Moab Music Festival in 2003: a position he still holds to this day. He spends his summers composing, playing, and teaching in Moab, Utah. He is the founder of the Moab Community Dance Band: a small contra dance orchestra that holds monthly social dances in Moab. Since 1996 he has been the principle pipe soloist and flautist for the Trinity Irish Dance Company touring worldwide. Layer is a also member of Noroeut: a Quebec-based quartet playing original and traditional music from that region, the Scottish dance band, Local Hero, and is the founder of a progressive acoustic quartet in NYC: The Spondoolix. His most recent project is a Scando-trad duo with fiddler and Nyckelharpa player, Sandra Wong. As a freelance recording artist, Christopher has contributed his music to several film and television soundtracks, commercials, and countless recordings as a “sideman” for folksingers and songwriters. www.christopherlayer.blogspot.com
